Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA) is the first step towards having a trade license for internationally experienced workers who have not completed an apprenticeship in Canada but who have the equivalent skills and experience. Every province in Canada has its own process for applying for trade equivalency assessment. The Trade Equivalency Assessment determines whether you can take the certifying exam for a trade in the province you reside. If successful in the exam, you will pay a fee to be issued a Certificate of Qualification in that trade. The Trade Equivalency Assessment is only available in trades with certifying exams. Trade Equivalency Assessment applicants are held to the same on-the-job training standard that is required to complete an apprenticeship program in the province of residence. To be approved, you must provide sufficient and verifiable evidence that you have:
- Competency in the trade’s skills, as defined by the trade’s Training Standard;
- Experience in the trade that is at least equal to the prescribed or recommended total training time in an apprenticeship program for the trade (including both on-the-job and in-school hours). If you have experience in any skilled trade, whether you are in Canada or outside of Canada, contact us if you need help in submitting your Trade Equivalency Assessment. Our team will be glad to assist you for free in the process of attaining your TEA in the province of your choice in Canada.
